A famous mathematician, G.H. Hardy once said that...

"A mathematician, like a painter or poet, is a maker of patterns. If his patterns are more permanent than theirs, it is because they are made with ideas."

Do you agree with Hardy? Do you think that math and art have patterns in common? Explain your choice.

After you have written your comment, check out the videos below and think about the way which they describe patterns.

So today I was at a seminar and between all of the awesome learning I did, I was asked a super question: "What is the best part of your school day?"
The first answer that came into my head was: bus supervision. I loooovvve it as the kids come off the bus in the morning and everyone (well, almost everyone) is fresh faced and ready for the day. The air is crisp and refreshing and the kids are piping up with stories of the night before. It gave me a warm and fuzzy feeling just thinking about it!

So I am wondering...
What's the best part of your school day? I really want to know!

The Grade Threes and I were doing a Language Arts project today which was super fun. They chose three different countries which have affected them, then they used the flags of these countries to create a unique flag, just for them. The website we did this on is sooo cool. Check it out at - hope you like it!

So this is one of the fun sites that someone told me about at my technology conference last week. You can build your own lego character! I know there are some students (who will remain nameless) that will LOVE this! Scroll down to the bottom of this page and have fun...

To My Fabulous Fours...

Hi Grade Fours!
I hope that test wasn't too tough on you. When I get back to school on Monday, we will go over it and I can answer any questions you might have. If you have anything you want to tell me right now, you can post it in a comment and I will try to respond today or tomorrow.
Now you can relax and play some games to practice your multiplication facts. You can play any of the fun games I have linked to below, or you can play Timez Attack.

Have fun!

Kiva Update!

Hi MRES students!

I wanted to update you on our Kiva loan. One of the people who we gave a business loan has already begun to pay us back. We have had $50 returned to our Kiva account.

I just went on to the Kiva website and have loaned that $50 to another person in need of some help. Edmond Adjoble lives in Togo and is going to use this loan to buy a motorbike, which he will use to start a taxi business. You can learn more about Edmond at the link below.

It warms my heart to know that all of the hardwork our students put into the penny drive this winter is helping people better their lives in all different parts of the world. Great job MRES!

Wimp Yourself!

I thought this was pretty fun! I know that lots of kids are really into Diary of a Wimpy Kid books. On the website below, you can "wimp yourself" - build a cartoon character that looks like you. Sadly, they didn't have any huge curly hair, so the girl in this picture was the best I could do for myself...
But maybe yours will be better!

Jylian's title: Multiplication Frog Business

Jylian decided that a crazy frog would be the perfect picture for this problem, but I am not so sure...

Okay, here's your problem for today....

Create a word problem that you can solve by multiplying 217 by 8.
Bonus points if you solve it!

I was googling around the internet last night and I came across this great website for kids. I follow the belief that "Earth Day is Every Day," so I love it when I come across a website that helps to build your understanding of the environment while playing some fun games.

On the Ecokids website, there are games, tips, online colouring, and tons of other cool stuff.

We do not inherit the Earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.

March Madness is here!

Phew! March is such a busy month at MRES. We are really running off our feet with different in school activities, mini-ball games, and special visitors. It is hard to keep track of it all!

To get your mind off some of the crazy stuff, I have added some fun new links to the side bar on the blog. There are math games, some fun poetry sites, and some sites that are just really neat to play around with. I hope you like them!
